How to play WikiTCG
WikiTCG is a free collectible card game that you play in your browser, on a computer or a phone. Every card is a Wikipedia article: a famous person, a city, a film, an animal species, an invention… The catalogue holds more than 2.59 million cards. You open packs, complete your collection and challenge your friends to trivia duels.
1. One card, one article
Each card shows the article's title, its picture (from Wikimedia Commons), a short summary and a link to the full article. Its rarity depends on how popular the article is: the more it is read on Wikipedia, the rarer the card.
| Rarity | Articles | Cards |
|---|---|---|
| Common | the 80% least read | 2,076,395 |
| Uncommon | the top 20% most read | 386,012 |
| Rare | the top 5% most read | 103,674 |
| Super rare | the top 1% most read | 23,327 |
| Ultra rare | the top 0.1% most read | 2,333 |
| Legendary | the top 0.01% most read | 234 |
| Mythic | the top 0.001% most read | 26 |
Each card also has two stats. Attack (from 1,000 to 10,000) reflects the article's length. Defence reflects how well it is sourced: the number of references compared with its size. A short but well-sourced article makes a sturdy card.
2. Opening packs
A pack holds 5 cards. To open it, click it or tear its top strip by swiping along its upper edge. The first four cards are drawn with the odds below; the fifth is always Rare or better.
| Rarity | Cards 1 to 4 | 5th card |
|---|---|---|
| Common | 56% | — |
| Uncommon | 27% | — |
| Rare | 12% | 70.6% |
| Super rare | 3.8% | 22.4% |
| Ultra rare | 1% | 5.88% |
| Legendary | 0.18% | 1.06% |
| Mythic | 0.02% | 0.12% |
Your stock refills on its own: one pack every 2 minutes, up to 10 with an account (just one without). You also earn packs by playing:
- Scholar Pack: earned with the daily missions, with better odds of rare cards.
- Titan Pack: earned in the raid, its fifth card is Super rare or better.
- Bonus packs: one per duel won (three a day at most), and one for each Story mode boss defeated.
3. Duels
A duel is played by two players, between friends or against the computer at three difficulty levels. Each player picks 5 cards from their collection: their combined defence is their life.
- To attack, click an opposing card: you answer questions about its article, 2 to 4 depending on its rarity. They come from Wikidata (dates, countries, occupations, populations…).
- A right answer takes defence off the targeted card. Under 3 seconds the damage is maximal; it then drops until 15 seconds.
- A wrong answer costs you attack, taken from your strongest card. No answer within 15 seconds and the question is lost.
- You win by destroying all of your opponent's cards, or by having more life left after 6 minutes.
4. Other game modes
- Daily missions: four missions, the same for every player, renewed every night (open packs, win a duel, launch an assault…). Each one earns 2 Scholar Packs.
- Raid: every day, a giant boss, a Legendary or Mythic card, that all players attack together. You get three 45-second assaults, with rapid-fire questions and your five best cards as your team. If the boss falls before midnight, every participant gets 3 Titan Packs.
- Story mode: four chapters (Great figures, Around the world, Timeline, General knowledge) of ten levels each, harder and harder. You have three lives per level and earn up to three stars depending on your mistakes. The bosses of levels 5 and 10 give packs.
- Higher or lower: which of these two articles is read more on Wikipedia? Keep the streak going to beat your record.
- Casino: you stake 1 to 10 cards from your collection to try to get one specific card from the catalogue that you do not own yet. The chance of winning is shown before you stake and always stays below 25%. Only cards are staked, never money.
5. Credits, shop and market
Credits are the in-game currency. You earn them by selling your duplicate cards to the site, according to their rarity:
| Rarity | Sold to the site |
|---|---|
| Common | 1 |
| Uncommon | 3 |
| Rare | 10 |
| Super rare | 30 |
| Ultra rare | 80 |
| Legendary | 200 |
| Mythic | 600 |
- Daily shop: every day, five cards from Rare to Legendary are on sale, at five times their selling price.
- Market: list your cards at the price you want (at least their selling price), or buy other players' cards. An 8% fee is taken on each sale.
- Trades: with a friend, each of you offers up to six cards, and the trade happens when you both confirm.
- Buying credits (optional): credits from €1.99, and Encyclo Packs and Titan Packs paid with credits. Credits have no monetary value: they are not refundable and cannot be turned back into money. See the terms of sale.
- Favourites: a favourite card cannot be sold or staked by mistake.
6. Where do the cards come from?
Card texts come from Wikipedia (CC BY-SA 4.0 licence), pictures from Wikimedia Commons and duel questions from Wikidata. Rarity is computed from the page view statistics published by the Wikimedia Foundation. The game is available in six languages: the cards are the same everywhere (one Wikidata identifier), but their texts appear in your language. WikiTCG is an independent project, not affiliated with the Wikimedia Foundation.
